The natural process that allows water from ground level to move upward to the highest branches and leaves of plants is known as OSMOSIS. Scientists discovered that a natural "semi-permeable" membrane present in the roots and the rest of all living plants is responsible for the phenomena of OSMOSIS. Only pure water can penetrate the membrane and always in the direction of higher salt concentration.

The process of REVERSE OSMOSIS uses mechanical pressure and a man-made, semi-permeable membrane, to change the direction of the flow of the pure water away from a salty water solution, thus the name REVERSE OSMOSIS.
